It might have been a difference story had Humphrey been able to open the scoring for Preston, however his effort was saved by Hull 'keeper McGregor early on.
After Odubajo had fired a warning shot for the hosts, which went wide, Hull did take the lead when a Clucas corner was scrambled away by Kilkenny, at least that's what he was trying to do but his clearance hit striker Hernandez (37) and left 'keeper Pickford helpless.
The next meeting between the two did see Pickford come out on top! Another deflected effort, from Dawson, saw Hernandez through but the Preston 'keeper denied the Uruguayan international this time.
Browne missed the best Preston chance to draw level, Gallagher and Johnson, creating this opening but the PNE man could only head his effort over.
Hull made sure of the win late on when debutant Maloney, signed from MLS side Chicago Fire recently, put in a corner that Davies (82) volleyed home to make it two-nil in the final 10-minutes.
