North End 3-2 Port Vale
Once again Preston were involved in plenty of goals on Tuesday night as our Johnstone's Paint Trophy bid continued after a 3-2 win over Port Vale at Deepdale.
Kyel Reid, given the chance to make an impact with his first start for us having overcome the knee problem he came to us recovering from, crossed to Chris Humphrey (13) who beat Chris Neal to give us an early lead.
John Welsh, Tom Clarke, Paul Gallagher and Neil Kilkenny all had chances to add to our lead but one-nil was enough to take us into the break ahead.
Those missed chances cost Preston with Tom Pope (51) heading home Chris Lines' freekick shortly after the break to draw Port Vale level.
Welsh almost restored the lead right away but this lead was soon restored when Gallagher and Joe Garner combined, Gallagher wanted the ball back but Garner (63) produced a chip to beat Neal and restore the Preston lead.
Gallagher (69) did have his goal a few minutes later though when he tapped in Humphrey's pull back to give us a two-goal cushion and leave us very much on track for the next round.
A last minute Pope (89) header reduced the deficit but his second goal of the game was nothing more than a consolation as we booked a place in round three, the draw takes place on Saturday, with a three-two win.
