It is a positive start to the season at Deepdale as North End run out 1-0 winners against Greek super league side AEK Athens.

Dressed in the new home kit for the first time this season the whites started the game brightly with Buchanan and Laird linking up well down the left.

North Ends first attempt on goal came from Chris Beardsley who hit it low but the shot flew straight into the arms of the Athens goalkeeper Konstantopoulos.

David Buchanan was the next to fire at goal after some good link up play with Holmes opened up a shooting opportunity but once again the shot was straight at the keeper.

Things were a bit harder for the whites in the second half, two minutes in Thorsten Stuckmann was forced into making a great save after getting down well to save a 30 yard effort.

The same thing happened at the other end a minute later as Nicky Wroe hit low forcing the Athens keeper to make a great save. Holmes continued to impress with his skills and a 20 yard shot that went narrowly wide.

Just before the hour mark Westley decided to mix the game up a bit with trialist Sam Winnall replacing Buchanan in attack. Lee Holmes was moving out to the left and another trialist Jose Moreira replacing Stuckmann in goal.

It was a great start for the trialist keeper as he was instantly needed after AEK's Enias Kalogeris shot from 30 yards out but Moreira, who was at full stretch, managed to get a hand to it and put it out for a corner.

Athens tested Moreira again on the 69th minute after substitute Thomas Tsitas blasted the ball towards goal from 12 yards out, Moreira somehow got a hand to it and managed to tip the shot onto the crossbar.

North End looked the stronger team towards the end of the game and in the dying seconds Jeffery Monakana picked up the ball down the right, after driving down the bye-line his attempted cut back caught a AEK boot and the ball was deflected into the back of the net.

It was a more positive show after some of the recent results at Morecambe and Bamber Bridge and PNE deserved the win.
