Southport 0-2 Preston
Attendance: 1,916 (1,400 PNE)
Two early goals saw PNE walk out comfortable winners at Haig Avenue in the first of seven pre-season friendlies.
North Ends were ahead after just 5 minutes thanks to a Steve Akrigg own goal. The build up to the goals was well worked as North End kept possession with some great passing, trialist Tiago Rosa found Keith Keane on the right who whipped a dangerous ball into the 6yard box, Akrigg connected resulting in the ball flying into the defenders own net.
Seven minutes later it was 2-0 to North End as Joel Byrom slotted home from the penalty spot. The penalty coming from a foul on Chris Holroyd.
North End kept up the good play for the rest of the first half with Graham Cummins, Keith Keane and Joel Byrom all coming close.
The second half saw a completely different PNE line up to the first half. Southport started the better of the two sides with trialist goalkeeper David Gonzalez being thrown into the action. Ross Faran came closest for Southport after his header from eight yards out hit the cross bar.
John Welsh was substituted half way through the half after a tackle appeared to roll his ankle, Jack King replacing him at right back.
Another trialist, lee Trundle, looked decent upfront throughout the half. In the closing minutes Trundle looked to have set up Chris Beardsley only for the linesman to flag offside.
All in all a comfortable win for the lilywhites.
