New North End Deal For Davies

New North End Deal For Davies

Ben Davies has racked up over 100 appearances, mainly due to loans at York and Fleetwood, but has been limited at Preston.

A new three year deal should change this.

The Preston defender, regularly involved during pre-season under new boss Alex Neil, has been rewarded with a new three year contract that will take him through until 2020.

Academy graduate Davies, 21, has started just seven league games for Preston but clearly Neil sees a big future for him at Deepdale or he wouldn't have used the central defender during pre-season as much as he has and certainly wouldn't have wanted Davies tied down to a new long-term deal.

Davies, who said he was 'over the moon', told the Official Website: 'I came back in pre-season not really knowing what to expect, but obviously trying to make my stamp on the team and with the new manager coming in and showing faith in me, it is a great boost so I'm delighted.'

Adding: 'It's about playing football and I want to try and nail down some games this year and with the security of three years, I can do that and focus on playing well for Preston North End.'

Meanwhile, another academy graduate Mathew Hudson is ready to step in if needed this season.

Hudson had been afforded plenty of opportunity during pre-season due to the injury to goalkeeper Declan Rudd. Unwilling to take any undue risks on first choice keeper Chris Maxwell, Neil has turned to the 19 year old.

The shot-stopper, who would be considered third choice at Deepdale, has taken his chance and Hudson has enjoyed his experience.

After his involvement in the win at Fleetwood, which he obviously enjoyed, he told the Official Website he likes to think he's taken his chance in pre-season and shown Neil he's ready if called upon.

'I really enjoyed tonight. Pre-season has been tough, but with the injuries it's allowed me to step up a little bit and hopefully I've taken my chance. I've known that for the past year that as a young goalkeeper, you've got to be ready for anything that comes your way. It happened at Elland Road where I made my debut when I was called upon on that day and I had to produce and I did. You've always got to be on your toes and ready for anything to come your way.'

Capability To Improve

Preston managed another midtable finish last season, which if a better start to upcoming season, ending it better too, Chris Maxwell feels North End could push on for a play-off spot.

Preston managed another midtable finish last season, which if a better start to upcoming season, ending it better too, Chris Maxwell feels North End could push on for a play-off spot.

He told the Official Website: 'If you ask any of the lads in the dressing room the first thing that comes to mind is that we want to get promoted. If we improve on last season`s place in the table then we`re not going to be too far off. We had a decline in the last few games of the season but if we`d have followed the form that we showed throughout the season we wouldn`t have been far off.'

Looking ahead to the season, of course underway against Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale on Saturday, Maxwell feels Preston have the capability to improve and hoped to see us start 'at full throttle.'

'We`ve got the capability to improve, we have the squad to improve; I think it`s going to be the beginning of a successful campaign. That given, we`ve got to make sure we take everything on board that the manager and the staff are saying. We`ve got to make sure we`re right at it and come kick off on Saturday we`ve got to make sure we`re at full throttle.'

Wednesday, beaten in the play-offs in each of the past two seasons, including the final the campaign before last, are a decent side to measure our chances against as if 'we want to achieve what we want to achieve then we have to beat teams like Sheffield Wednesday at home.'

Maxwell, who made himself the number one at Deepdale last season, will face further competition from Declan Rudd, following his arrival from Norwich.

He's also got to prove himself all over again, which he's happy to as Maxwell's also been impressed with the new boss.

Adding: 'It`s brilliant, he`s come in, he`s implemented the way he wants to play and the way he wants things to be done. The way he`s gone about it has been brilliant and the lads have responded to it in a brilliant way as well. It`s looking good and we`re all excited to show our stuff at home on Saturday in front of, hopefully, a packed house.'

Concluding: 'The fans are vitally important to us as players and they`re vitally important to us as a football club. At the end of the day the fans make the football club. The following is fantastic at this club, we`re hoping that they`ll keep doing that and progress as well. You also know that the results on the pitch determine that and the performances on the pitch determine that. We`ve got to make sure we do our bit - the fans will do their bit - and as a combination we`re going to be successful as a result of that.'
