Vital View - Championship, 7th May 2017

The Championship season concluded with the final round of games played over the weekend.

A late Aston Villa equaliser prevented Brighton from going up as champions, Newcastle had that honour.

Blackburn's victory wasn't enough to keep them in the Championship - Rovers will join Wigan and Rotherham on League 1 as victories for Birmingham and Nottingham Forest secured final day safety.

Here's a round-up of the Championship action from the other games.

Aston Villa's last minute equaliser saw them end the season with a 1-1 draw, preventing Brighton from going up as champions. Albion, who ended the season poorly, failing to get a win they needed from their final three games to win the title, go up to the Premier League as runners up to Newcastle.

Brentford finish the season 10th, but lost on the final day in the visit of Blackburn to Griffin Park. However, Rovers' 3-1 win wasn't enough to prevent them from being relegated into League 1.

A first defeat in seven was suffered by Bristol City as Birmingham's 1-0 win at Ashton Gate was enough to keep Harry Redknapp's Blues in the Championship, giving him a second win in his three games.

Burton's fightback came too late to prevent a 4-2 defeat against Reading at the Pirelli Stadium, who got a win to go into the play-offs with a third place finished confirmed, the Royals will face Fulham in the semi-finals.

A third defeat in four was suffered by 10 man Huddersfield, who finished fifth as a result, as Cardiff ended on a high with a 3-0 win at the John Smith's Stadium. Town will face Sheffield Wednesday over two legs.

Newcastle's 1-0 over Barnsley, a third in a row to end the season, saw the Magpies' instant return to the Premier League come as champions.

Norwich thrashed QPR 4-0 at Carrow Road to end a disappointing season, for both sides, on a high.

Goals difference, following a 3-0 win from the visit of Ipswich, kept Nottingham Forest in the Championship, ahead of Blackburn, despite the victory they also secured.

Rotherham's impressive end to the season saw the Millers denied a win to end the season by Derby's late goal in a 1-1 draw at the New York Stadium.

Sheffield Wednesday, fifth, go into the play-offs having suffered a first defeat in eight when Fulham, sixth, came from behind to beat the 10 man Owls 2-1 at Hillsborough.

The Wigan return to League 1 came with a 1-1 draw in the visit of Leeds, seventh, finishing five points off the play-offs in the end having gone five without a win to conclude the campaign.

A first minute goal was enough to give Wolves a 1-0 win over Preston, 11th, who ended the campaign without a win in six, suffering five defeats in the process.
