Bringing On Your Leading Scorer Isn't A Gamble

Preston secured their place in the next round of the FA cup on Tuesday when they came from behind to stun championship outfit Ipswich, to win 3-2 at Deepdale.

When the Lilywhites were one-nil down, Simon Grayson decided to turn to the substitutes bench around the hour mark. What a bonus it is when you have your top goalscorer, Joe Garner, to turn to as an option!

It was his arrival that turned the game for Preston and also earned him plenty of praise from the boss.

Grayson said: 'Bringing Joe Garner on as your leading scorer isn't a gamble.

'He's got great movement, he's a brave lad, he'll get on the end of things and he's two-footed. He's playing with a lot of confidence and we want that to continue for a long time.

'It was a typical cup tie, especially in the second half, the first half there wasn't too much in it.'

With the original third round tie finishing 1-1, Frank Nouble put Ipswich ahead in this replay before Garner came on to score instantly, not once but twice. David McGoldrick looked liked he'd sent the game into extra time but Garner popped up two-minutes from time to complete his hat trick and earn Preston the win.

It'll be Nottingham Forest in round four next for Preston.
