Preston booked their place in the semi finals of the northern section of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy on Tuesday night with a penalty shootout win over Bury at Gigg Lane.
Jack King's (25) first half effort was enough to send Preston into the half time break one-nil up, however Bury did have chances to draw the hosts level.
Bury's equaliser came just past the hour mark when Joe Skarz (62) headed home but within minutes Preston were ahead again when Andrew Procter (68) scored and this left them on course for a place in the semi finals, that was until Matt Doherty (84) scored to level again for the home side.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff's sending off meant that The Lilywhites had to play the closing minutes with 10-men, however Stuart Beavon's (90) goal still looked as though it had won them the match but an injury-time freekick from Steven Schumacher (90+2) meant the game ended in a 3-3 draw and a penalty shootout was needed.
Gregg Wylde's penalty miss for Bury meant that Graham Cummins' penalty won it for Preston to see the visitors advance 5-4 after the shootout to book a meeting with Coventry in the semi's.
