For the fourth year running Preston's involvement in the League Cup ended in round three, Middlesbrough the latest side to knock them out at Deepdale on Tuesday night.

Middlesbrough got off to a dream start, with defensive mistakes costing Preston, with Emmanuel Ledesma (13) and Merouane Zemmama (18) leaving the visitors in complete control inside the opening half of the first half.

Jack King (40) sent Preston into the break with some hope when he pulled one back just before the interval.

Yet another mistake just past the hour though allowed the Championship side to complete a 3-1 win, and take their place in round four, when Richard Smallwood (61) scored.
