It was today reported that Preston North End has adopted Lurgan Town Boys Club as its link up side in Northern Ireland.
This means that various groups will be travelling over both ways and working together in partnership. Lurgan has a good reputation and solid base to build on and in time could provide us with some good youngsters to make a bid to break through to the first team.
Timmy Dillon, former first team manager at Town, who spearheaded the link up told the Lurgan Mail: "This is a great opportunity for Lurgan Town. It is a massive step forward in the club`s development and will put us on the football map. In recent years, some younger players have left for other clubs, but now they have no reason to leave. They can be safe in the knowledge that if they are good enough they will get their chance across the water."
From a personal pint of view this could be a really good place to visit if Lurgan becomes a regular location on our Pre - season programme. It is a cracking little place to spend a couple of days on the beer. The local brew is a sickly sweet hangover cure called Buckfast and it is served in Lurgans best boozer the affectionately named 'bat cave`.
The Lurgan club might be excited about the link up for football reasons, and I like the idea of North End having a feeder club. But more than anything I hope we have a few games over there in the future, it`s brilliant.
